270 Degree Ocean View Theater - April 2005 - page 3

In the spacious master suite, at first glance, there are no signs of any AV equipment. However, hidden away in the ceiling are two pairs of Sonance D7001 speakers that give a hint as to what might be in the hope chest at the foot of the bed. If you were hoping for HDTV, you’ve got it as a motorized lift brings up a 36-inch Sony direct view tube HDTV up for easy viewing from the bed. The colors in the bedroom are very soft pastel purples and pinks, which make for a soothing feel, and having the cold gray and black lines of a TV or plasma mounted on a cabinet or on the wall in the room would spoil the sanctity of this relaxing environment. This clever lift system lets the homeowners see what’s going on in the world on the news, then hide the TV away and forget about the world with the push of a button on the Crestron remote.

In the kitchen, a 4:3 TV set is tastefully integrated into the rich cabinetry with which the homeowners can enjoy a cup of morning java. They can also open the French doors that lead out to a beautiful swimming pool and tennis court and enjoy a light dinner and watch the sunset while feeling the soothing ocean breezes. Lighting and AV controls are conveniently located just to the left of the TV on the wall and create an interesting balance of Old World class with a hip edge of new technology.

In addition to the media theater, Sound Solutions designed and installed whole-house central music and lighting dimming systems. Much attention was paid to making all technology disappear as much as possible: hence the Vantage keypad that magically disappears among the foliage. Cleverly hidden are a total of 50 Vantage lighting keypads and 11 Crestron touch panels. 14 pairs of Sonance six-and-a-half-inch three-way flush mount speakers can be found throughout the home if you look very hard. The central system includes quite a few signal sources, among them an Escient Tunebase CD Jukebox.

In one of the home’s guest rooms, a finely crafted dresser sits in the corner upon which are some thoughtfully placed books, a photo frame and a decorative candle. In Southern California, where the ground can shake and slide, people often fasten these kinds of knick-knacks to keep them from moving in the event of a catastrophe. In this home, however, they need to be stuck down to the cabinet for a different reason. By pressing a button on the control system on the wall or the remote control on the night stand, the cabinet comes alive and yet another concealed TV lifts out of the cabinet. The picture and books and candle remain on the wooden platform above the TV. No extra speakers were added this room, as it’s just a simple TV for guests to enjoy while taking in that spectacular ocean view.
