"Family First" Home Theater
By Bryan Dailey

Family is first and foremost for this client of Elite Custom Audio & Video in Montclair, CA. When the client came to John Gilmore and his talented team of installers and designers to put in a purpose-built theater in this home in the hills just east of the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, it was important that there be enough room in the theater for big get-togethers where the families good enjoy their favorite films. The client also wanted a look and color scheme that hadn’t been done to death in other theaters and, most importantly, a big and bright picture and sound that has the same emotional impact as the local multiplex theaters without the hassle of waiting in line at the box office window.

Moving from the bright, white-toned walls of the living room through a set of French doors into the theater, the deep cherry wood and blue color scheme is striking and inviting at the same time. It feels as if you have stepped both backward and forward in time simultaneously. Rope lights strategically placed into the detailed ceiling panels that have been painted a soft dark blue color create a futuristic aura in the room, yet it somehow seems perfectly married to the rich red cabinetry and paneling on the wall. Beautifully lit movie posters on the walls and two large wall sconces as well as a series of recessed lights provide some of the most well-balanced lighting in any of the theaters we have featured on the virtual pages of RHT.

Only when the homeowner began telling me the story of how this theater came to be did I learn that the room we were standing in was actually a covered, indoor/outdoor patio no more than a year ago. Because there is a large pool behind the house, there were certain building code limitations to how large the theater could be. However, the end result is a very spacious room with vaulted ceilings and room for seven oversized Pullman reclining theater chairs and a space for an ultra-cushy massage chair. Forget about going to the movie theater at the local megaplex with seats that are spaced closer together than the seats on a coach flight on turbo prop. In this theater, there is so much leg room that all of the seats can fully recline for the ultimate in luxury movie-watching.
