Egyptian Home Theater - June 2004 - page 2

The ceiling has an array of faux rock beams with translucent blue plastic inserts that create a killer lighting effect. The beams that run across the ceiling also serve to break up standing waves and provide smoother bass response in the room. Speakers abound in the Egyptian theater, as Elite is able to showcase several surround sound speaker systems from Revel and other lines they carry, as well as subwoofers from Revel and Velodyne. Bipole/dipole speakers are mounted flush with the wall, while bookshelf-type surrounds are mounted in angled boxes at the tops of the square pillars that surround the room.

A customized AMX remote control sits on an angled speaker stand in front of the primary seating position. Keeping with the theme of the theater, the background and various icons that have been programmed into the AMX include ancient Egyptian symbols and designs. If you have an AMX or Crestron system like this installed in your home theater, you can have your installer customize the look and feel of the menus and background images. Because this is not a dedicated home theater, but rather an elaborate audition room for the products that Elite carries, the AMX unit is constantly being updated to work with the pieces of gear that move in and out of the theater’s equipment rack. The same will be true of your system as you upgrade and swap out pieces in your theater. Having a good custom installer who can not only install the gear but also keep your control system working properly is essential to having a theater that you can truly enjoy.

Speaking of equipment, at a glance you might not notice that one of the textured, sound-absorptive walls has a pair of doors that open to reveal two equipment racks, filled with racks of high-end audio/video gear from manufacturers like Krell, Runco, JVC and many others. The gear that they have on display in the system is constantly changing, but customers will have a chance to see and hear some of the world’s best AV gear in action.

The shelves that house the equipment are simple black wooden platforms which can be raised or lowered by moving four stout metal shims. Regular bookshelf clips are not strong enough for some of the heavier pieces of gear, such as power amps and some AC power products. A good rule of thumb when building a rack is to keep your heavier pieces towards the bottom to add stability and make installation easier. You might not always be able to have your gear situated like this, but having to lift a 100-plus-pound power amp over your head to slide it into a tall rack is not an ideal situation, even for the strongest of people.
