Dig this home theater... - June 2005 - page 2

Keeping with the vintage theme of the home, Mission-style seating was custom built from fine materials and scaled to the client’s height. The sides of the five love seats and single chair are reminiscent of teak furniture that you might see at a fine resort, but the cushions are covered in an ornate fabric. Cup holders are a feature found on the most home theater chairs, but they almost always come off as cheesy. Baumeister came up with a very clever integrated spring-loaded system in the armrests of the chairs. With a simple press of a button, a small square platform with a recessed round groove pops out of the arm. Going one-step further to maximize the comfort of the homeowners and their movie-going guests, the seats are built to incline. What’s better than relaxing and enjoying a movie in your own home theater? How about watching that same movie with your feet up and a cold drink at your side? Baumeister agrees and made sure their clients have this luxury in every seat in the house.

In total there is room for seating for 11. A single chair in the back row, just to the side of the pillar, allows for a comfortable walkway. A series of steps that rise from front to back allows for plenty of visual clearance. Even the person who draws the short straw and has to do bartender duty at the back of the room in the attached wet bar has a clear shot of the action on the 110-inch Da-Lite screen, thanks to the tapered stair design.

The coffered ceilings of the theater are ornate yet not distracting, and the period light sconces and alabaster pendants provide a soft, even glow for the room when entering and leaving. When the automated lights dim, all of the highly detailed surroundings in the theater become a thing of the past as the Barco CineVersum 120 + Master 3-Chip DLP projector with the Barco VI-2 HDTV Card comes to life. With the lights fully on, the Barco’s two bulbs automatically fire up to maintain a bright picture.

Along the walls, acoustic treatments hide and sonically enhance the nine Genelec in-wall loudspeakers and two Sunfire subwoofers. Below the crème/tan-colored wall treatments are wooden panels that give the room its rich, intimate feeling and also serve to liven up the sound, as it would otherwise be too absorptive with the carpeted floors, wall treatments and padded seats.
